Salem: a town that exists in silence, far away from other forms of civilization. The only way to make it through the dense forestry that surrounds it is to follow the train tracks that start at the train station; the train is used only to transport the coal mined Salem out and to bring in the few resources Salem cannot produce on its own. The Elders and adults of the town feel content with ignorance of the outside world, and they find annoyance in the youth's restlessness. "Salem is a sanctuary," they say. "It is peaceful here, why take that for granted?"
The younger kids find ways to entertain themselves, with secretive parties at night, hanging out in the cemetery, and daring each other to venture into the forest. Still, even with the occasional hoodlum, a policeman has an easy job in Salem. But this town's serene facade is deceiving.
Ever since Salem was founded in 1806, it has had an unexplainable captivating aura. Something about the town makes it almost unable to be left -- but this quality isn't obvious until one truly tries to part with the town...at death.
Salem: a town that exists in silence, keeping hushed the hundreds of souls it holds in an eternal state captivation, never granting them permission to pass onto the afterlife. Souls that wander astray.
Day-by-day and remaining unseen, the Astray have watched as the living go through life, grow old, and eventually take their position in this unintended hell.
Now, the Astray are growing restless in their impatience for a way out. For the first time, Astray and humans are making contact. Humans that are easily susceptible to the Astray practice in their abilities to communicate with these invisible beings; humans that partake in this call themselves Seers. The Astray are capable of morphing their substance into any form, and humans have gradually taught themselves to perceive the Astrays' false forms. Some humans have been able to teach others how to make contact with the dead.
Paranormal activity is rising, especially as the Astray discover new techniques to make contact with unsuspecting humans -- sometimes to reach out to a loved one, sometimes to prank, and other times to get revenge.
Rumors have spread, and people are skeptical; the Elders believe the children are playing more games, yet others are not so sure. Some are still ignorant to this recently uncovered -- but dark -- secret of their beloved town.
Who are you in this town cursed with a terrible fate? Are you a Seer, in tune not so much with reality as you are with the spiritual elements of life? Or are you a human with a desire to reach out toward the helpless deceased? Perhaps you do not believe this nonsense at all, like the Followers. Maybe you are an Elder -- except you secretly believe what the children are saying.
No matter who is who, one thing is for sure: it is not just the dead who need to find a way out of Salem.
